Counselor’s Corner

Who I am and what I do.

Hello! I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sharon Weiss-Cohen and I am the school counselor for Overbrook Educational Center. This is my fourth year at OEC and I couldn’t be happier! I don’t know how I got so lucky to be the counselor for the school with the best students, parents, and faculty!

I thought I would tell you a little bit about what I do during the day. I spend a good part of my day speaking to students who are either unhappy, angry, confused, anxious, or who just need a shoulder to lean on. Sometimes I bring in a few students at a time to resolve a conflict. We have trained students to be peer mediators so that they can also help solve conflicts with their fellow students. If you know of two students experiencing a conflict please make sure to let me know.

My interns and I also run groups. This year we are running girls’ groups, social skills groups, empathy groups, and a grief group. I go into classrooms and do guidance lessons on topics such as friendship, kindness, bullying, and just getting along in general. I have been going into the 5th grade class and Mr. Glackin’s class each week to help the students write their life stories. They are really getting to be good storytellers!

An important part of my job is helping the children choose and get into great high schools. To help with this I go into the classrooms and do guidance lessons on doing their best (especially in the 7th grade) and then making good choices based on their interests and their skills. I will also be hosting our second annual High School Fair at OEC on March 22nd. This was a huge success last year and I hope to make it even bigger this year. Another big event this spring will be our Career Day. The students enjoy this every year. I already have my interns working on this. If you are interested in presenting at our Career Day please let me know. We are always looking for parents to tell about their jobs to our children.

I consider myself to be a support not just to the students but to parents as well. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns and I will be sure to meet with you as soon as possible.
